historia de la banda
Corría el año 1981 cuando Lars Ulrich, nacido en Dinamarca, llega a Los Ángeles con la idea de conformar una banda de rock. Lars conoció a James Hetfield apodado “El niño más enojado del mundo”. La banda comenzó conformada por Ron McGovney en el bajo, Dave Mustaine en la guitarra, James Hetfield en la guitarra rítmica y Lars Ulrich en batería.
El 15 de octubre de 1981 nacía: Metallica. Así aparecía la banda influenciada por el heavy metal europeo con ganas de mostrar toda su furia en tiempos de canciones suaves y estrellas pop que parecían anunciar desde los charts que el rock duro estaba muerto y sepultado o, al menos, reservado para los viejos fanáticos del metal y las minorías gustosas del heavy.
En aquellas épocas lo único parecido al metal que podía escucharse en la escena de L.A. eran las bandas de tendencia glam-metal y Ulrich y Hetfield se trasladan a San Francisco a ver que novedades se daban por la ciudad; allí conocen a Cliff Burton, y deciden el remplazo de McGovney. Los cambios continuaron incluyendo al guitarrista Kirk Hammet, que reemplazaba a Dave Mustaine, y con esta formación lanzaban su primer LP “Kill ‘Em All” en 1983, album que revolucionó el género metalero y que los distinguió de las demás bandas por sus ritmos tan rápidos y cambiantes.
En 1984 presentan su nuevo material discográfico Ride The Lightning, inspirado en textos de Lovecraft y en la película Los 10 Mandamientos.

Esto hace que algunos cultores de la Música dark gótica también se acerquen a Metallica. 1986 es el año de: “Master Of Puppets”, el tercer disco de Metallica que define los canones del género conocido como “trash metal”.Por entonces Metallica podía jactarse de haber llevado su proyecto al éxito absoluto: habían vendido más de un millón de copias de Master Of Puppets en Estados Unidos y por primera vez iban a Europa para iniciar una extensa gira llamada “Damage Inc.” Pero un golpe duro haría centro en el corazón del grupo. Después de haber tocado el 26 de septiembre en Estocolmo, Suecia; Metallica sufre un accidente en su camión y el bajista Cliff Burton fallece.
Luego de recuperarse de semejante golpe Metallica busca el reemplazo de Cliff y se topa con Jason Newsted.
A mediados de 1987 el nuevo disco de Metallica: un álbum de covers titulado “$9.98 CD: Garage Days Revisited” serviría para presentar a Jason de manera formal.

Un año después sale al mercado el que quizás sea uno de los albunes imposible de no destacar en la historia del rock pesado, heavy metal o como quieran llamarle: sale "...And Justice For All". Con este disco llenaron más de 120 arenas tan sólo en Estados Unidos sin el apoyo de radio, televisión, ni la industria discográfica.
Tuvieron que pasar algunos años para que Metallica entrara al estudio y grabar "The Black Album", disco que les abrió las puertas ahora si a las radios y la TV a través de los videos gracias a su simplicidad y calidad.
El éxito es bienvenido por algunos y denostado por la vieja guardia: para algunos metálica era la heroica banda que había puesto al metal en el lugar que merecía, para otros era la banda que con su éxito había situado al heavy metal en un lugar comercial en el que las tribus metaleras no se sienten cómodas.
